Description
A gudri is a blanket made from many layers of fabric which are all stitched together with intricate handiwork of thousands of tiny stitches, known as kantha, to create a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. These are generally much bigger and heavier than the sari kanthas which are more readily available. Kantha is a prominent form of embroidery consisting of running stitches especially in India and Bangladesh. These vintage Kantha quilts are produced with at least 4 layers of fabric (many of them old saris). The origin of kantha quilts can be traced to some very resourceful women centuries ago who up-cycled parts of their old cotton saris and dhotis to make much needed blankets. The best aspects of these vintage Kantha quilts are the patches and uneven threads that give them their unique character. They’re also a beautiful way of preserving history.
